Expert talk with Avni Amlani, International Expert and Consultant to Dermalogica India.

Image courtesy: Elizaveta Porodina for Dash Magazine

Avni Amlani
If you are a beauty junkie you might already know the brand Dermalogica. But whenever we hear this name – we subconsciously think of skin care. However, when I started asking hair care queries to the International Skin Expert and Consultant to Dermalogica - Avni Amlani; I received a pleasant surprise. She gave us some amazing tips, tricks and quick fixes you can easily follow to achieve healthy hair.

How would you describe a healthy daily hair care routine?
Before your hair wash, start by brushing your hair. It may seem like the obvious thing to do, but maybe what you didn't know is that brushing distributes its natural oils and the shampoo-conditioner throughout the hair.
This promotes healthy and even growth. Remember to shampoo in small, circular movements; don't forget to target dirt collecting areas such as the nape of your neck. Massaging your scalp will increase blood flow which encourages growth and will stimulate your hair's natural oils (producing shiny locks). Similar to body lotion for your skin, conditioner is moisturiser for your hair and will keep your strands hydrated and manageable. For an even application use a wide-toothed comb.

How to control frizz and static during the winters?
The biggest adversary of winter hair is static electricity so anti-static home care is essential. Try spraying a brush with hairspray and use anti-static tools like wooden combs and ionic driers. Use conditioners that coat the cuticle, effectively weighing the hair down and focus on treatments that encourage moisture retention. Using heat without protection adds static so applying a heat protector or hairspray beforehand is a must.

Give us some tips on adding shine to dull hair?
Clarifying shampoo treatments are essential to bring hair back to life. Hair oils are great too, give your scalp and hair an oil massage every week for a fabulous healthy shine. Try Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil.

Repairing dry and damaged hair
As with skin, the hair will also need extra moisturising during the cold weather. I advise to add an intensive moisturiser to their regime and alternate it with their regular conditioner for a surge of special care. The moisturiser will provide some benefit and help moisturise dry hair. Try Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster. Use it as a leave on serum by applying few drops from mid-length to the ends of your hair.

What kind of hair is most likely to be affected in the winter?
All hair types, especially Long hair is prone to loss of condition in winter and running your fingers along the hair shaft from the root to tip will reveal pockets of dryness. These are the areas to concentrate on when it comes to applying conditioner and treatments.   Use leave-in nourishing conditioners.  Use a treatment masque once a week.

We all know what happens to skin as we get older, but what happens to hair?
It may be surprising to know that hair is at its thickest and strongest between the ages of 12 and 14. After that, there is a very slow deterioration. It's not something you will notice for many years but, extremely slowly, the hair's diameter decrease, thus becomes finer and thinner.
What can we do to protect our hair from the signs of ageing?
There is no doubt the hair needs more care and attention as we age. Not only does the hair's diameter thin, but mature women tend to colour their hair more.
Use hair products which have UV filters to protect the hair from UV damage.  Use leave-in conditioners and hair treatments.

Will someone who spends a lifetime colouring and heat styling their hair find it looks older more quickly?
There is no scientific evidence, nor reason why hair should age faster with chemical or heat processing. In fact, these processes give the impression of less ageing because they swell up the hair strands. People with coloured hair needs to go for professional hair treatments/spa, which helps to hydrate and nourish the hair and scalp.

Does Dermalogica have a hair care products?
Dermalogica hair care products were introduced to meet the need of Dermalogica fans who wouldn't want to use any other beauty brand. Dermalogica's Shine Therapy Shampoo contains highlight-enhancing Rosemary Oil and deep-cleansing Lavender Extract that restore lift and bounce while beta hydroxy Citric Acid reduces flakiness and revitalizes the scalp. While Dermalogica Silk Finishing Conditioner helps improve manageability with silkening Wheat Proteins, and helps minimize irritation with aromatherapeutic essential oils. Both these products are formulated without artificial fragrances and colours.

When it comes to hair styling there is one perennial dilemma that all girls struggle with, it is the quest of finding a good hair straightening machine. It took several trials and repeated errors before I found my solution! Out of the many ironing machines that I have tried my most preferred styler is the GHD MK4 Flat Styler.

GHD as a brand has been a favourite with a lot of celebrities for years now! It’s effective and delivers optimum results on most types of hair. The price is a bit steep but buying a gadget is always an investment. The reason why we love this styler is because:

A very sleek ironing machine that is light-weight and extremely user friendly. This styler is very versatile and helps create waves, curls and even poker-straight hair. It is all you will ever need to create a hairstyle complete with perfect shine and volume.
What gives it an edge over the other ironing machines in the market are its features:

Ceramic heaters: This produces negative ions when heated - no matter what. Negative ions neutralize the hair, closing hair follicles and smoothing the hair shaft also expect far more even and diffuse heating, smooth handling

Sleep mode: After 30 minutes of being idle, the iron will go into sleep mode and beep every 10 seconds as a reminder that it's on, and it's still plugged in. Hence preventing any fire hazard that there maybe.

Universal voltage: This feature is recommended for those who often travel abroad, having a universal voltage makes your iron functional across all countries.

Round barrel: It works beautifully to create curls and soft beach waves apart from straightening your hair

2.8m swivel cord: Helps stop the cord from being twisted and damaged.

Now creating your favourite hair styles will take only a matter of minutes. Get your own GHD today and wear your hair like a fashionista! Happy hair styling. Style away!

Divo tries out – Moroccanoil Treatment

Moroccanoil Treatment Rs. 2,160 for 100ml
What is it? A powerful antioxidant and UV protector, Moroccanoil’s proprietary Argan oil blend is rich in vitamins and natural elements that fortify the hair, including Vitamin F (Omega 6), Vitamin A to improve elasticity, Vitamin E to protect against free-radicals, and Phenols to shield against environmental stressors.

How and when to use?
Use it on damp hair right after your hair wash or as a serum for styling/taming frizz or flyaways. The key here is to not be heavy handed because just a little Moroccan Oil goes a very long way. Apply a pea sized amount on the mids and the ends of your hair and then style as usual.

How does it feel?
For hundreds of years Argan oil has been used by women in Morocco to treat hair and nails in order to counteract the effects of the hot climate. Argan oil can be a little heavy for the hair but Moroccanoil Treatment is less of oil and more of a serum. It was instantly absorbed into hair to create a shine.

What does it do?
My hair is fine but frizzy and extremely dry. I have been using it for the last one month and the results I have seen so far:
- My hair tangles lesser than it used to.
- Even in between washes, hair feels soft and manageable.
- Diminution of my annoying flyaways.
- My ends look healthier.
- Even though I applied this product everyday, I did not feel any kind of product build up whatsoever.

What I liked about the product?

- Absorbs quickly into the hair.
- I used 2 drops and it lasted the whole day. (not the smell only the smoothness)
- Smooth’s the hair ends well without weighing hair down
- Revives hair
- It is golden-hued, feels silky.
- Has an amazing musky scent that smells DIVINE!

What are the cons?

- Too expensive.
- If you use too much, it tends to weigh your hair down and makes it look oily.

Is it worth the hype?
I would say yes. As I have never tried a product that could deliver the way this one does.

Where can you buy the oil?
Everyone I know has wanted to try this product but half of them were clueless where they can buy it from.  And no you don’t need to ask your cousin in the US to pick one bottle for you because this fab oil is now available in India. But beware there are duplicate copies being sold so when you buy bottle from any of the Indian salons make sure you are not buy a fake. The authorized distributor for Moroccanoil products in India is Lewanna Group. Check the packaging of your bottle when you buy. It should have this address:

Make Waves

I keep falling in love with Neha Dhupia’s gorgeous curls over and over again so I decided to try it for myself but without using a curling iron! Three things I tried that worked (on a temporary basis as my hair is extremely silky and straight).

1. Use a salt spray
Ever notice how fab your hair tends to look after a day spent by the ocean? It naturally gets soft waves on its own. Most people have some sort of natural wave to their hair, and a good salt spray is great for really bringing this out. Salt sprays should do the job for pretty much any hair type, from thin and straight to thick and wavy. They also add volume (especially great for girls with thinner hair) and help get rid of frizz. Since salt sprays can be pretty drying, it’s not a good idea to use these every day.

2. Hair Buns
Wash your hair, section it into equal parts, and twist and wrap damp hair into two to four low buns. You can spray a little hair spray (or even salt spray) for extra hold and definition. This is best to do at night after you get out of the shower. When you wake up, undo the buns and lightly brush through your hair with your fingers. You can also apply more salt spray and scrunch if you wish, in order to give your waves extra definition.

3. Braids
Just like the previous method this one works well in the night. Before going to sleep soak your hair in water and then start tie small braid on your damp hair. Tie small thin braids if you want more curls and big thick braids if you simply want soft waves. Make sure the ends of the braids are tied with a tight grip. Now get ready to sleep on the hairstyle that you just created and get up with fab wavy hair.

Star Style: Sridevi

I had almost forgotten how amazing of an actress Sridevi is but I was reminded again while watching her performance in English Vinglish. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, the story, the characters (especially the cute French guy). But apart from being an amazing movie star if you follow high heel confidential as religiously as I do you will know she is a bit of a fashionista too. Her style is very fresh and NOW apart from being sophisticated and classy. And she just doesn’t have a good eye for fashion but has an exceptional choice in hairstyles too.

Lets take a walk down the memory lane to see Sridevi’s best looks from this year’s award shows and film promotion appearances:

Sridevi picked Sabyasachi at her movie premiere with a Sabyasachi clutch and jewelry from Amrapali completed her fab avatar. We are loving the half ponytail with a middle partition, that makes sure those beautiful earrings show off.

In Manish Malhotra at the sets of Jhalak Dikhlaja flaunting her beautiful long hair adorned with soft curls.

The right combination of braid and curls make for Sridevi's perfect updo! This picture was taken at the English Vinglish Premiere - 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

Apart from the Gucci lilac cropped trousers, the over-sized beads and the Chanel bag the best thing about this look is her side braid.

Sridevi walked the ramp for Sabyasachi at Delhi Couture Week 2012 in a sleek, glossy pulled back low updo.

After following her fashion on various website we know we are absolutely right when we say - Sridevi always masters her look with Indian wear. Here she is seen wearing Manish Malhotra (yet again) paired with a messy updo.

We may still have Katrina, Priyanka and Kareena in Bollywood but it gives us an odd pleasure to see this old star return back to the silver screen.  We have and will always continue looking upto her style.  Welcome Back Sridevi!

Pack light Pack smart: 10 things you need in your travel hair kit

I have never been a light packer. But after taking several unplanned trips I have developed a great sense of respect for people who pack light/smart. Packing only things that are needed is an art mastered by people with a lot of experience.
You should take only things that are needed. Neat, clean and well groomed is exactly what you need to be, and you can achieve that exceedingly well even without carrying extra baggage.
I asked 50 women about their travel-packing methods and I found out of every 10 women 7 tend to forget/neglect carrying haircare products. Yes, you might carry your LBD or your crisp white shirts but none will make you look good if you are having a bad hair day.

Follow my suggestions below, honed over dozens of trips:

You need 10 things and 10 things only:

1. Shampoo and conditioner
You don’t need to carry a full sized bottle or even a travel sized one. For a two-three day trip a sachet is more than you will need. Pantene has an amazing new offering where one side of the sachet is a shampoo and the other side is a conditioner.
2. Hair-dryer
Panasonic EH-ND11 Hair Dryer, Rs. 569
A lot of good hotels do provide you with blow-dryer, starightners and curling irons but I have had trips when I had to walk staright out of the airport into a meeting. A mini blow dryer comes handy during such times. Just apply a shine serum and brush your hair, at the same time, blow-dry the brushed strand of hair from above holding the blow-dryer nozzle at a 90-degree angle. This will give you sleek, shiny, flyaway-free hair.
3. Hair serum
Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Blow Out Balm

Always carry a multitasking product like this one protects hair from thermal heat as well has makes the hair smooth without weighing down the hair.
4. Bobby pins
There is no need for me to explain how incomplete any hair kit is without bobby pins.
5. Hair grips
Divo hair grips

A smart girls guide to perfecting a ponytail, bun or braid is the right use of hair grips. Always carry the thin black rubber ones along with the bright coloured ones.
6. A comb
Divo Comb
A must-have in your handbag and your kit. A paddle or round brush can also be your best bet while travelling.
7. Dry Shampoo/Mattifying Powder
Schwarzkopf OSiS Dust It
As I mentioned earlier make sure you pick multitasking product. This dry shampoo doubles as mattifying powder to give extra oomph to your any backcombed hairstyle.
8. Hair accessories
Carry some small hair accessories like these pastel coloured hair grips to accentuate your hairstyle and to divert attention in case you are having a bad hair day. Make sure they match the outfilts you are carrying.
9. Nylon hair rollers
They come handy to fix the misbehaving strands of hair that decide to twist and turn in unshapely manner, ruing your hairstyle or when you are having your ‘There’s something about Mary’ hair moment.
10. Pouch/Bag
A bag big enough to fit all the above and small enough to fit in your suitcase.
