Cannes Calling

As much as it’s known for the brilliant films showcased at this idyllic seaside city, it’s also infamous for its uber glam red carpet. And 2012 didn’t disappoint! Fashion and makeup aside, we took a critical eye to how our favourite fashionistas wore their hair. Some wowed, some fell short of the mark, and a few gave us great ideas that we can’t wait to try on ourselves!
Kirsten Dunst
The former Spiderman’s love interest seems to have developed a thing for hair accessories in the recent past. After her starry hair pin at the MET Gala, she was spotted at Cannes with a very pretty bejewelled floral hair band embellishing a messy milkmaid braids hair do. Could you get any more summery than that!
Aishwarya Rai
Her return to the red carpet was much hyped and the beauty queen fought off all her detractors with her elegant sartorial choices. While the clothes and makeup won us over, her hair needed an editor’s touch. The twisted updo with the Indian outfit was good except for the curly wispy strands reminiscent of 80’s Bollywood. She did much better with the out-turned bangs whose romantic vibe perfectly complemented her gown.
Sonam Kapoor
When she walked the Cannes carpet last year in that stunning Gaultier gown, people could not stop gushing about India’s rising fashionista. This year though she walked a fine line between love and hate. The poker straight hair, at least for us, just does not do justice to the lovely seaside ambience and makes her sharp features appear gaunt. With the gothic Victorian black gown, we expected more drama in her hair but the middle parting leaves us on the fence. But her sleek pulled back do with the dotted Naeem Khan gives us nothing to complain about – the pairing was brilliant.
Diane Kruger
Ms. Kruger went very retro with most of her hair choices this time with finger waves, soft curls and delicate buns resting at the nape of her neck dominating her looks. In stark contrast was her not-messy-but-not-too-neat ballerina bun. Now this is a style we can try especially if your hair is already on the right side of dishevelled.
Jessica Chastain
Chastain also went the retro route with gorgeous sleek curls that cascaded down one shoulder. The curls really brought out the gradations of colour in her warm, red tresses. But our favourite look from her was a much simpler style, probably ‘cause we can see it on ourselves. The middle parting with twisted strands pinned up behind with a tiny glittering clip was so prairie-girl-goes-glam.
Marion Cottilard
This woman is a personification of Parisian understated glamour. Her opening look at Cannes was a simple ponytail with a middle parting paired with a face that seemed completely devoid of makeup. What bowled us over however was the super exaggerated bun with a delicate strand of jewels surrounding it. We’ve been recently talking about hair jewellery trend and trust her to be leading the pack. The next wedding you have to attend, wrap a gold necklace around your bun and rake in the compliments.
Freida Pinto
The Immortals star kept her hair startlingly simple at all her Cannes appearances alternating between simple ponytails and a flawless updo. But we can’t blame the poor girl for playing it safe. For all the criticism she faces for her acting skills, she doesn’t need the world dissecting her beauty choices too.
