IIFA Insider

The Bollywood brigade made their way to the island country of Singapore last weekend to attend the most glamorous awards ceremony in this industry – the IIFA awards. While their male counterparts did look suave and debonair, the ladies undoubtedly stole the show. From industry veterans like Rekha and Neetu Singh to red carpet novitiates Aditi Rao and Parineeti Chopra – they pulled out all the stops with their hair, makeup and styling perfectly in place. Since we are all about hair – if you haven’t guessed that already – we take a look at the hair styles and trends that emerged.

Put’em Up

What’s a black tie red carpet without updos right? Predictably IIFA also saw its fair share. Sameera Reddy is still on a roll in terms of her styling – retro finger waves hairdo paired with smoldering eyes was a match made in heaven. Kalki Koechlin, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu all opted for soft, romantic styles. Kalki and Priyanka pulled it off but there was a disconnect in Bipasha’s look. We’d have preferred a braid or beachy waves with that cute summer dress.

Cold Shoulder

The pretty but done-to-death and bordering on unimaginative one shoulder wave seemed to be a celeb favourite. Everyone from yesteryear star Rekha to the Rowdy Rathore girl Sonakshi Sinha were spotted in it. The only breath of fresh air was Sameera Reddy, who gave it a retro twist for the second time this weekend.

Warp and Weft

Braids are still proving to be a red carpet favourite. Kalki, Aditi and Bipasha, all paired their long braids with boho chic maxi dresses. But what stood out for us was Shreya Saran’s voluminous take on the style (it took a while to figure it out) and Chitrangada’s fishtail with a poufy bouffant. The latter’s was an unexpected but pleasing pairing with the gold corset.

Pony Up

They’re pretty versatile and the stars at IIFA proved that. Asin and Parineeta kept it cool and casual in unfussy, straightforward styles. Nargis and Sonakshi had uncannily similar versions of it – high, straight, sleek and finished with a towering bouffant almost like a faux hawk! Raveena Tandon’s though was a little dated and we wish the pretty lady turns things up a notch.

Let Loose

From the Bollywood belles who let their hair down on the red carpet – literally – our favourite was Kalki. Her soft, large curls contrasted the straight lines of her gown. While Bipasha went poker straight (It worked with the minimalism of her Shivan Narresh sari), Neha Dhupia and Chitrangada went for messy volume. The let down of the day was Priyanka Chopra in in-turned tresses that did absolutely nothing for her.
